Hello all, which is the best handheld scanner in France? I have several wideband receivers but would like to get a digital trunking scanner. Which one (UNIDEN? Whistler?) is the most recommended? It would be great if pre-loaded systems would be available for example (like they exists for Uniden in North America). Are they? If not, are there frequency databases to upload manually? Thank you for any pointers.

Most of the public safety systems are TETRAPOL which cannot be monitored by any scanner. I wouldn't bother to bring a scanner.

Form my experience, some of the cities have TETRA systems that you can monitor for public transit agencies and airports.

There are also number of MOTOTRBO and DMR Systems throughout the country.

Thank you. I will try a scanner - the question which model is best (is my JDX11 wideband scanner maybe the optimal one? I also have a DMR radio which can scan so that is also covered).

I will try my SDR radio - as there seem to be software solutions for decoding TETRA. We shall see.

Still: what (other) is good (I do realize the experience will not be as interesting as in NA) or used by others in France? Thank you!

And on a related note: are there any frequency databases the same way they exist for NA? Where would I find them?

if it were me I would get the Uniden , unfortunately the database here is thin on freqs so you would have to resort to a local french person with their own database that you would have to thus create your own lists based on what you want to hear providing its not encrypted last time on a cruise near france I could hear the french navy doing live fire exercises on marine band , my experiences in Italy , Spain they used the same bands as we do here in NA with likely exceptions, dive in
for what its worth :
this looks like the authorizing body :

No scanner on the market as of date of this posting handles TETRA. Options for this are Tetra Demodulator for SDR# (requires SDR dongle(s) and PC to run it on) or the AOR AR DV1 or DV10 wideband communications receivers (very costly, limited availability) Tetra trunk tracking upgrade costs extra. Not a whole lot ID'ed in the RRDB for Paris but I'm sure encryption is prevalent
