DENVER -- Clearing skies overnight combined with that fresh snow cover allowed temperatures to plummet well below zero Friday morning.

At 4:44 a.m. Friday morning, Denver International Airport dropped to 18 degrees below zero, setting a new record low for Feb. 2. The previous low temperature was 16 degrees below zero, last set in 1996.

The life-threatening temperatures were accompanied by unbelievably low wind chill temperatures, in the 25 below to 50 below zero range.

Some of the coldest temperatures and wind chill values recorded so far:

- Air Force Academy -- Temperature -17 degrees, Wind Chill -37 degrees
- Akron -- Temperature -12 degrees, Wind Chill -32 degrees
- Alamosa -- Temperature -24 degrees, Wind Chill -38 degrees
- Aurora -- Temperature -15 degrees, Wind Chill -30 degrees
- Berthoud Pass -- Temperature -10 degrees, Wind Chill -57 degrees
- Centennial -- Temperature -10 degrees, Wind Chill -25 degrees
- Copper Mountain -- Temperature -15 degrees, Wind Chill -38 degrees
- Denver -- Temperature -18 degrees, Wind Chill -40 degrees
- Limon -- Temperature -16 degrees, Wind Chill -21 degrees
- Monarch Pass -- Temperature -15 degrees, Wind Chill -56 degrees
- Wolf Creek Pass -- Temperature -10 degrees, Wind Chill -40 degrees

Geez guys we've been in the negative double digit low temps for weeks up here in the Greeley jungle. I know I'm usually scraping the car windows when it is.

-20 was the low this morning.

Then again last summer when the Denver TV weather air talent folks were complaining about lots of 90+ temp days we were in the 105 to 108 degree range.

Sux to live in my town.

At least you know that the main source for the errors is that the reporting weather station is out at the Greeley airport and where it is located. Down here neither the Greeley airport, which is what they reference when you go to the NWS site and bring up a `pointcast' for Platteville, nor the Longmont airport jibe with `reality'. According to my weather station, Davis ProII Plus, our low was -20.5°F @ 07:15 and the `high?' was 27.2°F @ 15:55 with a low `wind chill AKA THSW Index' of 29.7°F @ 07:55. Sometimes I think they just toss a bunch of numbers into a hat and then get some poor blindfolded schmuck to draw out a few and call it a forecast or reading. As for those 105° - 108° days... If you added at least 10° to them you would have had what we were having.

Just an `Olde Fart's' 2¢ worth. {GRIN!}

NOT in Alaska, damnit!
I am seriously NOT trying to be political here, but I don't think OUR part of the globe is warming!

I drove over Berthoud Pass Thursday night and again this morning. While Denver was below zero late thursday, the top of the pass was +14. Inversion perhaps? Fighting the wind on the way back today was fun. Back to normal as Granby was -7 when I left, the top of Berthoud was +20, and it got above freezing by the time I hit Idaho Springs...

I'd still rather freeze to death than the other way around!

Phil,

You are in a cold area there in Greeley. It's 1:40 AM right now and Greeley is reading a temp of 7 degrees. In contrast at the same time Golden is reading 47 degrees. These reports are coming from amateur weather stations across the area. I'm at 44 here in Northglenn. Temperatures around the area are really mixed right now. Some examples are:

18 to 20 in Ft. Collins
25 to 27 in North Thornton
24 to 27 in Arvada
26 to 27 in Erie
43 to 45 in Superior
44 to 46 in Broomfield
