For a while now, RED Center dispatch in Northbrook has had radio techs going to different locations making signal tests. They will call each other on the main dispatch repeater (159.66) and then say “switch to channel 16”. Does anyone know what they’re up to or what this mysterious “channel 16” is?

Hi Don!

RED has been working (from what I have heard) on moving to P25. I don't see any new licenses so try looking at the current licenses and program them in and see if there is any traffic on them.

Some freqs to try include
151.010 (The old North Shore channel)
154.445
154.355
154.160
154.205
154.235
159.795
154.340
155.280

I have heard Red Center on one of the 303xx StarCom channels. I will pay closer attention and give you the correct one.

RED is currently working on developing a new P25 VHF conventional system. The techs are doing coverage testing on the dispatch channels as well as the fire ground channels (they are making sure they can receive the FG's in the center). Channel 16 should be FG Red. You'll likely only hear them if you happen to be close to where they are. I do not believe it will be encrypted at this time.

Any word on a timeline on when it will go live?

Red Center conducting radio checks on MABAS Statewide TG 30330
RED Center does weekly (or is it monthly?) radio checks with 25 MABAS primary and backup dispatch centers on the MABAS talkgroup (1 - 25, 26 - 50, etc) They are also the primary contact for USAR TF-1 on that same talkgroup
