Regarding a Conventional Freq. in Howard County

I have the following freq. programmed into my Pro-95:

154.54000 EMS FM

Not only do I hear EMS dispatch on this freq. but it seems I also hear a school's (I think it's Northwestern) radio communications. I am not sure why I am hearing those other transmissions other than Countywide EMS. Does anyone have any idea as to what thats all about?

This is a standard business frequency, not a public service frequency. In some areas having the police, fire, or EMS on a business frequency is not uncommon. During travels through Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky I have found that this is true.

Sometimes the agency has a regular public service frequency to dispatch and they have a regular business frequency for a F-2, chit-chat channel, or something like that.

They probally use the same freq.with different PL's to seperate their use. Pretty common..

I kind of figured that it had something to do with PL's. I am not that familiar with PL's. Is the Pro-95 capable of doing PL's? If so, how do I do it?

No, the pro 95 does not do PL tones..When I had my Pro-95 as my primary scanner(Pre-Digital scanner days), it sucked not having that capability.

The howard county VHF fire/ems tone out frequency is 154.31. This is the old dispatch frequency that was used before the trunking system. It is still used for pagers
and after the activation tones the audio is simulcast with the trunking system dispatch channel.

Chris, I had an idea that it was simulcast. The main reason that I decided to put some of the old conventional freqs. in is because a few weeks ago there was a real bad MVA in the county and LifeLine was called to the scene. LifeLine was trying to communicate with the personnel on the ground and they had a hard time getting together so they eventually went to the old fire or EMS, conventional freq. I figure, if something like this happens again, I am covered and might hear transmissions between personnel on the ground and LifeLine.
