I recently acquired a Regency HX1500. Despite being nearly 30 years old it's super clean and is the hottest receiver I've used on the rail band.

Does anyone know where I could find a charger for it or has anyone made one using Radio Shack plugs and wall wart?

HX 1500

I had a HX 1000 and it was a very good scanner. It was designed to be used with NiCd batteries, and a RS charger should work, but keep the current down. Many older NiCd circuits for charging do not like NiMh batteries so using a low charging current would be a good start. The first NiCd AA batteries I used were only 200-300 ma with a charging rate of around 20 ma.

The HX-1500 doesn't have any charging circuits to regulate battery charging, so keep current down as posted, depending on battery type used. Watch tip polarity, I think it is a negative tip. Many others on these forums recommend external battery charging.

I'm more looking to simply power the scanner from home current rather than draining the AA batteries when I use it at home. I found a Radio Shack 9V 800mA wall wart and "L" plug and it is indeed negative polarity. I took out the AA batteries as instructed. The radio powered up and functioned fine from the house current but there was a bad audio hum so I immediately disconnected the scanner. Any ideas?

If push comes to shove Scanner World claims to still have available a cigarette lighter charger available. I could get that and plug it into a 12V power supply.

Thanks for the replies.

I have an HX-1500 and the charger that came with it, no I don't want to sell either. The charger as rate on the label, 12 Volts at 200 mA with the center of the connector with negative polarity. This wall-wart powers the scanner without batteries in the scanner.

Haha, it's cool. I'll see if Radio Shack has any wall warts with those specs.

This radio is sensitive to power supply hum. The original wal wart that came with it hums, so did a different brand. I now use an electronic Magnavox wal wart that was bought years ago from Kmart. Need a better filtered unit or an electronic one.

You might check with G&G Communications and see if they have the power supply you need for the Regency HX-1500. G&G Communications is in New York.

Yes, I see an old friend is back again. By chance, I attempted to find this company. The web page has been down for quite some time. I believe this is the charger that would work for your radio. I let someone borrow mine and it never returned, great radio, great shielding and great quality.

MA502, AC ADAPTER 220 VOLTS INPUT REGENCY FOR EXPORT - No Returns - Final Sale - Scanner World - The Largest Dealer of Scanning Radios in the World

That adapter is used for 220 volt areas of the world, we use 110 here in the USA and Canada.

I got myself a 12V RadioShack wall wart and as I posted earlier I had an Adaptaplug that fit ("L" for those who are wondering, tip negative for this scanner). There is no audio hum and when hooked up to my attic antenna this Regency is probably the most sensitive thing I've come across for monitoring the rail band, even moreso than the ICOM 2m rigs.
