Registration Suggestion

I see a LOT of messages from new users asking questions that, in order to get an answer, requries those reading the question to know the location of the new user. And yet there's nothing showing for a location on the user info and the user fails to give that info in the question.

I don't know if it's possible, but IMHO, it would be a good idea to make that field manditory when a new user registers.

Making it mandatory will only cause false information to be entered for those people who don't want their location to be known. The best thing to do is to either ignore location specific posts when not enough information is given to answer, or for one person to ask location information. Heaping abuse or badgering a new person about not providing enough information is likely to cause them to just move off somewhere else. 8)

I'd bet most people will fill it out correctly though.

I don't live there but it is on the road to my home so I adopted it as my address... at the intersection of Cummins Ferry Road and Fords Mill Road.... county and state are correct, street address not listed for security reasons.

People can and do put fake (and often amusing) information in their registration. But even the information that looks normal can be fake. How do you know I'm not really be Tim Duncan from Houston Texas? 8)

Personally, I tend to think most people here are providing reasonably accurate information.

Either way... I just thought requiring something to be entered there would be a good way to help us help the new user. No need to burn a lot of bandwidth on the idea.

Confession: I'm not a frequenct visitor to the s-domain anymore. Mayor LaPlace is a bit pedagogic.

I don't think I'd support forcing a location to be filled out. I value my online privacy but don't see the harm in mentioning I go (went) to school in downtown Milwaukee and am from the near Northwest burbs of Chicago. Other people have a different idea of privacy and I do appreciate that.

And lou's right. It would only lead to falsifying data. I prefer to keep my first name to myself and people with whom I have one-on-one contact, for example.
