Does Uniden make an extension Data cable that goes from the scanner to the remote head? The cable that comes with the RH-96 is only 10' and I want to go from trunk to drivers console. Thanks

Then...

Then I need to run a second extenstion cable for the audio? The people over at Scanner Master said the stereo extension cable won't work for the data side since the data connector is not a 1/8" jack. Thanks

The data connector is a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo jack. Yes, if the scanner is in the trunk, you'll also need to bring audio up to an extension speaker into the cab of the car.

Can the 15x scanner be programmed through the RH-96 remote head?

None of the radios can be programmed through the head. The programming jack in the head is for updating the software in the head only. Programming must be done directly through one of the ports on the radio itself.

alos you will need to access the main unit to turn it off and on as the remote head does not shut the main unit off.......

Yes, you can use the remote head to manually program the BCT15X. All menus and functions will appear.

I've read this thread 3 times trying to understand what UPMAN has said. My 996XT does not have a 1/8" data jack that is compatible with the stereo headphone extension mentioned. Yes, the audio, but not the data. What scanner is the OP trying to control since it wasn't mentioned in the 1st post.

The Remote Head serial connector is a 1/8" stereo jack. You can extend it by plugging a stereo headphone extender cable into that end of the cable. You could also extend it using a DB-9 extender on the scanner end of the cable, but that would be more difficult to route through the car and much more expensive.

equipment arrived

ok, so I now have the RH-96 and BCT-15x. I see that the data cable that plugs into the RH-96 is a 1/8 inch stereo plug and the other end is a female micro USB connector. On the back of the 15x is a DB9 data port. The 15x came with a cable, female DB-9 (plugs into the scanner) and another female micro USB connector. I guess I could run the micro USB connector from the RH-96 to the front of the 15x, but that isn't a clean look. So my question: Do they make a male-male micro USB coupler to connect the two USB cables? If so, where can I purchase one? Thank you.

996XT/RH-96 Interface Questions

Several questions here.
I cannot program my 996XT nor does it work with my RH-96. It appears that the connector has missing or broken pins. It does not appear that the front connector of the 996XT is a mini or micro USB type. What type of connector is it and how can I obtain one to replace mine? (will need to replace RH-96 interface cable also but that is available at Uniden site)
Are the two (front, rear) serial ports on the 996XT separate?
Can the 996XT be programmed through the rear DB-9 serial port.?
Can the RH-96 be connected to the 996XT rear DB-9 serial port.
If so is there a schematic available showing the front and rear serial port pinouts to enable fabricating cables? Thanks in advance.

Make sure that you have Version 2.00.01 of the firmware installed. I forgot to do that when I bought my 396XT and it drove me crazy until I figured it out.

The scanner can be programmed through the front or rear port. The two ports are separate, the rear port is primarily intended for use with a GPS receiver. The connector is a commercially available, although not tremendously common one.

I think a couple of people have successfully connected the head via the rear port, but I'm not sure. Search this forum and you might find a thread or two about it.

Looking for RH cable.

I am looking for the cable to connect a RH to a 996XT scanner. Any ideas on who might carry one?

Thanks,

Mark
