scanner is a BCD996XT
I will first admit, I do not know how to pgm this scanner very well.
I have gotten into the menu key once too often and now, while scanning systems:
I notice "CUSTOM 10" continues to scan, stop for about 3 seconds and continues to scan.

...... how do I remove the "CUSTOM 10" from scanning ?

I never use this search stuff so I had to go through the menu.

> is press the knob (function)

Press Menu, select Search for...>Edit Custom>Custom 10>Search with scan>Set Lockout>Lockout

Just press "0" on the keyboard or on Freescan (in custom search mode). You can turn each custom search range on and off by simply pressing the keyboard number corresponding to the custom search number you want to listen to or shut off.

The above only works in custom search mode, not while scanning other systems, which is the problem the OP was having.

When my BCD996XT is in normal scan mode, I only see and hear that. When I am in custom search (of which I programmed in my own search ranges), I see and hear only that. I do not know enough about the BCD996XT yet myself to understand any other way that custom search and scanning modes "clash".
