Hello everyone I'm a newbie who needs some help.
I'm buying a Uniden SDS-100 scanner, my question is about antennas, I have chosen two Remtronix, a Rem-842s and a Rem-820s. My question is which one will give me the best overall performance, it is a broad question I know but any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks omanzz

You need to state what you will be listening to. Uhf, Vhf, 7/800Mhz?
Thanks for your reply, I want to listen to both. It looks like the 842s antenna does tri-band, vhf/uhf/800Mhz Tri-Band. And 136-174/420-470/800-900Mhz Optimized. Looks like this is the one to get , am I correct? Told you I was a newbie 😆 lol

I have Rem-842s and a Rem-810s (which is really the Rem-820s w/o the O-ring, same performance). I have SDS100 too.

Just as real life there is no one size fit all. and have to take priority.

The Rem810s is really better pulling P25 800Mhz signal
The Rem-842s SEEMS better handling 136-174/420-470 but Rem-810s is quite close (and both are not that good).

So I found REM810s always is on the SDS100, Rem-842s is pretty much lying in the dark (Especially I have few other non SDS scanners for Non P25 use).

Your location /use case may be different.

I suppose I could get both, I want listen to police, first responders, etc. I think I will start with the 842s, I know I have to make my own decisions, but value your opinion, because I'm so new to scanners, so do you think that's a good idea? 👍 How do you like the SDS-100 ? I am drone pilot, if you wanted to know about drones I could bend your ear off lol

I'm not sure how strong your (700-800Mhz) P25 coverage, it is quite likely the signal is good enough that it does not matter which one to use. In that case, 842s is better choice.

I generally do not like SDS100 analogue/HAM/airband (which I listen a lot) part, so I use BCT15X for such purpose. The SDS100 is purely for digital (P25/DMR/NXDN)

I hate one and love the other. The one with the narrow top, forget the model, tends to bend. I have not had this problem with the straight one.

Do you have brand and model numbers for those antennas

LOL, I thought you would ask that. The REM-842S is the straight one I love. It does not bend like the REM-820S. In fact, I have probably owned around 15 of the latter. Why? I don't want to own an antenna that is prone to peyronie's disease.

However, I own my behavior. I am clumsy. This is why I have hard leather cases for my scanners. Also, the frequency of occurrence of dropping my 436HP is ridiculous. I believe I've had to send it into Uniden two or three times to fix the busted SMA housing.

I am having much better luck with the SDS 100 using the larger battery door. I can set this scanner on a flat surface with some degree of security. It has tumbled a few times.

The most recent really pissed me off, but God was looking out for me I suppose. The entire innards of the SMA came out. Luckily, I own one of the SMA tightening X wrenches.

It is working like a charm.

PS: I believe I once asked the Uniden representative who is now deceased why the 436HP sucked on analog VHF. From what I recall, he indicated that the radio was designed for the future, digital scanners.

I am saying this because there is a slight improvement in VHF analog reception with the REM-842S using the 436HP or SDS 100. Both antennas seem to work fine on P25 conventional/trunked VHF.

The REM-842S is a little beast. It is tough!
