Hello All

I been out of the scanning hobby for some time because of school but have found an interest again. I picked up a Uniden BCD396XT p25 ready scanner and just fell in love with this thing, been having lots of fun with it. I live in the the west side of Schaumburg and stumbled across a interesting ham repeater on 444.150mhz, according to the Illinois repeater association website it has not been updated on its coordination since 07/12/08 WA9HIR in Berwyn, Illinois. I took a run down to the town of Berwyn on some free time and could not copy the repeater at all on my handheld scanner but was able to copy it great in my neck of the woods, even with the antenna removed, must be local??. Recently I been monitoring two hams on that same system on p25 mode using a NAC of 135, N9AWQ John Lozar and KB9SAR Robert Odrowski whom I heard also on the analog side of the system using a 114.8hz ctcss tone. Interesting enough when N9AWQ and KB9SAR are on the p25 side using NAC 135 I don't hear they use their call signs and as well I hear them using very foul language. I just think that people in the ham community should be aware of the operating practices of these two hams on this repeater and maybe people in the ham community should make WA9HIR William Hargadon aware of this type of activity on the frequency he may be coordinated on still. I am a younger person entering high school and been intersted in Amateur Radio for quite some, I was studying for my technicians license and been doing well on the qrz.com practice test. Situations like I have been hearing on my scanner on 444.150mhz are situations that make me thing twice about even bothering with getting my ticket, I hope I am wrong about that thought but maybe thing like this will be fixed some day.

Sorry you had run across those guys. Unfortunately, some hams are under the assumption that if they operate on P25 that no one will be listening and so they loosen up a bit.
On the other note, amateur radio repeaters need not be coordinated by fcc rule. However they are NOT to interfere with other repeaters in the area either.
If you decide to obtain your ham license then you could notify the repeater trustee/ owner of this behavior if it continues.

You could also lock out that frequency from your scanner and never have to hear then again. There's lots of other repeaters in the Chicago area to listen to.

Ham radio, just like any other hobby, has people who don't always represent it in the best light. It always has, and it always will. The people you're talking about might go away, but others will replace them; you can't lose sleep over it or let it affect your decision to become involved. Hams do a pretty good job of policing their own. The ratio of bad ones to good ones is very low, and if you get your license, it will get lower. You can even get a P25 radio and talk on that repeater with other rule-abiding hams.

I also agree with the suggestion about not listening to it. There are plenty of ham repeaters that I don't listen to for one reason or another.

Funny thing is, it was probably nothing compared to some of the stuff from the 147.435 repeater out in LA..some of that's enough to make a deaf man blush.

That having been said, I'm in the group that believes profanity doesn't have a place in on-air language, HOWEVER I do agree that it's nice to hear something besides what stores you went to that morning and how much gas you used to get there discussed.

Also, noticed it's your first post on the forum, so welcome! I'm not too far from you, in Hoffman Estates.

I agree that it could be nothing compared to the crap that you will hear on the 147.435 SoCal repeater or the crap that you could run into on 75 or 80 meters?

Go over to the Audio section of this group and click the California map and listen to the 147.435 repeater, some of the language will make a sailor or biker blush, no disrespect to sailors or bikers either it's just a comparison.

147.435 is listed several times on the Cal map so you can't miss it.

Just about anywhere on the bands you can hear much worse on many repeaters or on 75 or 80 meters.

Like others have said, just forget about it and find another frequency or another band that peaks your interest and forget about them, chances are that one or both of these guys may be the repeater owners and/or the owners just don't care.

You can't worry yourself about all the crap that you will experience on the air and after 37 years in this hobby I have heard it all and I have ran into some very unique individuals and I just move along to another frequency/band and just forget about them.
