Well the time came to renew my ham license, & several people told me to pay for a service to renew it, as the process was quite difficult. I had forgotten my password to the FCC site, but that took 5 minutes to find. I renewed the license on line on a Wednesday, & I had the license in hand the next Monday. I was amazed a Federal entity was so efficient. Good for another 10 years now.

I just went thru the same thing with a vanity call. The W5YI group is making a killing convincing folks it's difficult to re-new or apply for a vanity. I had my application filled out in no time.

Take your time. read the instructions & do it yourself.

They make it sound like it was 20+ years ago before the FCC went online. It is extremely easy to renew today and it is FREE!

About renewing and getting vanities through W5YI VS the FCC. When my father and I went to get our vanity calls, he went through W5YI, and I did the FCC route. He paid roughly $50, I paid $14. I was lucky enough to have my COREs ID and password written down, and it only took a few minutes. (The only problem I had was, I timed out looking for valid call signs, I should have looked first and written them down). When I come to renew -- I am intending to do it through the FCC web site, all it will cost me is the cost of the vanity.

I applied for my vanity callsign on the FCC website... in 1997!

The was in the pre-ULS days and it wasn't nearly as easy as it is now, but it was possible.
