I was wondering if anyone could offer any suggestions. I have an Azden PCS-6000H that i got secondhand, but there is no audio from the mic. It keys up clear as a bell transmitting to an HT, but absolutely no voice. Are there any other brands of mics that will work with this radio, or am i stuck trying to repair this one? Thanks in advance.

No answer to your questions - but a few segestiions in trouble shooting....

In learning about your vintage radio I found that following that may help....

http://www.notpurfect.com/main/AZDEN_PCS6000_Manual.pdf Pages 13, 14, and 15 might be of interest regarding your problem.

One of you fellow Azden users posted this page at azden

I am seeing from Google that the mic can be found for $10 o $25. I wish my Yaesu mics were that reasonable. It seems like this was an exceptional rig in it's time.

Give this a try for the pin out: PCM-463
You may just have a broken wire somewhere and it could be an easy fix.

Thank you. I actually found that exact diagram last night through Google. Should i check the connector on the mic first, or go straight to the radio?

Here's what you do. First, check with an ohmmeter for continuity between pins 1 and 2 of the microphone connector on the mic itself. If it's open you've got a broken wire in the loop or a bad element. You will need a 500 ohm dynamic microphone element if the old element is bad, which it might be. Take the microphone apart to see how much space is available for the replacement element. If you have an old dynamic mic element patch that into to your Azden mic to see if you get audio; hopefully that will solve the problem. You also might find it helpful to get an unwired 8-pin mic plug and attach wires to the mic 1, mic 2, ground, and PTT pins, which would make the substitution job a lot easier.

It is open, so i guess my next step is going to be taking the mic apart to check for a broken wire, although the mic cable does not appear to have been overly stressed or bent. Would any 8-pin mic work if i can find a replacement? Thanks for the help.

The answer to your question is "probably not." There is no standard for wiring 8-pin mic plugs, but once you resign yourself to rewiring an 8-pin plug it's not all that bad. You'll need a 25-watt soldering iron, and either 20-20 vision or a magnifier but it can be done. Be glad the problem is in the mic and not in the radio.

Okay, i have a little more info regarding my mic issue. Sound comes through somewhat if i blow into the mic, and i can just barely hear voice if i turn the volume up on an HT. Could this be a damaged wire, or would this point directly to the element failing?

You have a junk radio. Toss it a corner to be used for spare parts. WAIT untill you pass a test, THEN get yourself another radio and then talk on it. [without a ham license you are in violation]

The radio isn't junk, the mic is, and i just managed to fix it. W2NJS, thanks for your help. I did have a broken wire at the mic connector, so i cut off about 2-3" of cable and re-soldered the connections and it works like a champ. FYI reedeb, i do actually have an aqquaintance of mine who is a ham, and he is also been very helpful in my troubleshooting and testing of the mobile i have, so i am in violation of nothing, as he has been present and transmitting for the testing. I'm fully aware of the rules regarding amateur radio, and i have every intention of following them. I just want to be ready when i do pass my test in another week, instead of looking like a newb that can't even program a frequency into a radio. I've had my nose in the books for the last month, and i have been through the entire tech question pool numerous times. I printed it out and i've had the wife quizzing me. I'm hitting 98% or better out of the entire pool, not just 35 random questions. I'm looking forward to passing my test next week, and then getting on the air once my call shows up in the ULS database. Thanks to all who have assisted me.

Good to hear you have that up and running. Most of the new breed of hams don't have any Elmer, don't have a clue and haven't built up any kind of knowledge base on their own or with help of others. You should pat yourself on the back for being the snooper and not the stupid guy. Investigating all avenues will help you develop as a ham.

Now get out there and get the ticket, you'll impress the guys in your area when you are able to tell them you actually fixed something and didn't need to ship it to some repair place that took half a year to fix something really simple. You are two steps ahead of most of this new batch of hams.
