The story so far:

I have an Icom 706Gmk2 that I want to install in the family car (2000 Saturn LW2). After much reading and research, I thought I could run the electrical wiring myself. Well, after doing what felt like a jury-rigged job (ran the wire out of the top of the hood and through the door, and I still didn't find a way to attach the negative lead without bolting it to the frame, arrgh!), and tearing it back out in the middle of the night last night, I have decided that the best thing to do is take it to a professional and have them run the DC cable for me.

My question is: has anyone had a good experience with a local installation specialist? I'm thinking that maybe a pro audio installer could do it? I'm okay with installing the rig itself, it's only the power cable that I want installed, preferably through a grommeted hole in the firewall. I'm thinking that should cost something in the $25-50 range?

I also have a 706 installed in my SUV... I had the car wired at the auto stereo store on the East side of State St., about two blocks north of Kirkham's -- I just can't place the name! I probably paid around $50, but had 8ga flexi wire run from the battery with big, in-line fuses on both sides. They also channeled the wire under the side panels to bring the connection point out under a rear seat.

I thought they did great work, and it took about 30minutes. My timing, however, was about 4 years ago. Still, an auto sound specialty shop is where you want to point your car! They all have the proper stuff if they specialize in installing large, aftermarket amps.

Good luck, Bob

I have a buddy here in SLC that does radio and light installation professionally. The company he works for installs for many of the agencies in the state.

Send me a PM and I will give you his contact information. I know he can do things in the company shop but might also be able to do it on the side for less money.

Update!

Bob (KT7L), you are thinking of Sound Warehouse. That's where I ended up going. I did the rest of the radio install myself, just had them run the wire, and it seems like they did a bang-up-job. They fused the wire on the battery end, and my wire already was fused on the rig end, so there are at least 3 fuses on there right now. Cost me $50 and tax. Figured that was a good price.

bneilson: Thank you for the offer to have your buddy do it. If I need something more exotic done in the future, I'll keep him in mind. Something as simple as a DC cable (but hard enough not to want to do it myself) I was okay paying a sound guy for.

I'll try to get pics up in the next little while.

Thanks again!
