This is a request that goes out to the manufacturers.

How about building hand held and mobile scanners with the durability and quality of an actual radio like a Motorola, Kenwood, Icom, etc. It seems that all the scanners out there are made from very thin light weight materials, are not very weather resistent and look like a toy. Another request would be to have audio quality and levels comperable to professional radios.

Pay $$

If the scanner was as good of quality as say a Motorola HT1000 or XTS 3000 I would be willing to pay atleast $1200-$1500, seeing as the XTS 3000 which obviously transmitts cost me $2700. The only problem is that I am not able to program it so I can't add different talk groups to it other than what my system administrator wants me to have. With my scanner I can listen to what ever I want but only talk on the channels I am aloud via my XTS. However, I don't carry my scanner on duty as I don't think it will hold up to the abuse and I have already paid $550 for it.

I think it as good as it gets. As for the durability part, I drive a truck, I carry mine with me all the time andhave NEVER had a problem with the durability of my RS scanners (92,95,96)

You may be willing to spend that on a scanner but I know I wouldn't. It took me over a year to justify buying my PRO-96. Dont think I'm a cheapo either because I have or had all the lastest and greatest radios that have been out in the last 10 years. For me to pay over $1000 for a radio it had better do a whole lot more then just scan.

Just buy a good leather case for the case issues.

I agree with the audio quality, but you have to remember that XTSs use much heavier batteries. Increasing the audio on a scanner would reduce the life unless you were to use even more cells - making the unit heavier and larger (which most people won't like). Remember that scanners also do a lot more than the XTS - they receive more bands and have a much greater memory.

There used to be an audio amplifier for ham HTs (that mounted inside the unit) that would increase the audio level. I'm not sure if it's made anymore or not.
