Here is my problem my whistler 1040 says use 50 ohm rg-58 or rg-8. Been using rg-6 and was working good but now some of the freqs want come in even my home county of Macon County, Tennessee. Just thought the rg-8 would be a good choice. Is rg-58 a good choice of coax to use.

Look at the specs! RG8 has less loss than 58 = in fact, when used at much more than patch lead length, the UHF band doesn't fare well at all. Your scanner is hand-held, so the manufacturer assume you probably will be working in a vehicle - if you have a base station antenna, distances increase so less lossy cable wins. RG-6 is quite low loss, and designed for TV and Satellite use as it's 75Ohm, not 50. This in practice doesn't impact very much. If you use UHF a lot, then even RG-8 in most brands has worse performance even though it is chunkier. It's all in the specs!

In receive only, the impedance mismatch makes little difference. The better loss characteristics of the RG-6 probably more than make up for it, especially above 300 MHz. RG-8 is best at lower freqs. Transmitting is a different story, of course, but you're not doing that.

Easy to overthink this whole situation.;)

Using 75 ohm coax with a 50 ohm antenna system will only give you an SWR of 1.5:1. Even for transmitting that isn't bad at all.

. You'll find RG6 quad shield has very low loss figures at uhf frequencies and can be found almost anywhere as opposed to Rg8. Do not use Rg58 or you might as well turn off the radio. 73, n9zas

tbharper- Hopefully after reading all the replies to your coax question you realize that your loss of some of your Macon Co channels is not likely to be related to your RG-6 coax. Replacing it may be a waste of money and time. Look for another reason... maybe antenna related... to your sudden change in reception conditions. Also: are you certain water has not made it into your outdoor coax connections? If there is a possibility of water ingress then yes, replace the coax and connectors (and RG-6 is fine as you have read).

It is in scanner, it will not pick up the 150 frequencies for some reason. Hooked up other scanners perform great..
