What would be better for a mobile install where the cable is exposed under the vehicle, RG-8X or RG-58?

Neither of them are any stronger than the other. 8X has a little less loss but thats about it. If your concerned about where the cable will be, possible contact with sharp edges, hot metal, chaffing, etc. I would sleeve it all. Get some rubber hose from the local parts place and run the cable through that.

Probably either will work just fine. All cables have losses, the thing with that is the length of the cable. For shorter lengths, less than 100 feet ('fudge' and say for distances of less than 50 feet), there isn't much difference and probably wouldn't ever be recognized at HF. At VHF/UHF things are different, losses tend to accumulate faster there. Still, for mobile use and short runs, either will probably do just dandy. Stick with premium cable though!

FYI, the RG8X is the same exact size as RG59, so if you're using SO239//PL259 connectors the proper reducer on the male connector is the UG176.

Thanks....

This is strictly going to be used for 2M/70cm, maybe 30W max power on 2M, and 5W on 440. I'm feeding a 1/4 wave whip mounted on a stake pocket.

Just go with the RG-58. It'll be easier to run. The performance difference for that sort of length is inconsequential.

Hey sparky, we both live here in Illinois. Leave nothing to chance here. If you are running it under the car outside, encase it in rubber hosing,
