Hopefully someone can help me.

I have a Uniden 296D apco25 scanner. I live close to the state airport in Warwick (1 mile away) and can not get any signals for Providence or any city north of Prov. Would this cause me to loose signal strenght (with all the radars and such) I am mainly interested in Central Falls, Pawtucket and others in the Blackstone Valley area. Should I look into sometype of signal amplifier. I don't want any atenna's on my house. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, and I do have the GRE handheld 20db amplifier, which helps ever so slightly, but I am still lots of dropouts and usually get every 4th or 5th word.

Thanks

Providence PD

You do have a problem if you are unable to scan Providence PD and Fire from your location.
I can pick them up in my mobile in South County.
CF and Pawtucket APCO 25 are rather weak from my location so you may have problems with them.
From the north, Cumberland and Attleboro MA are two that I find to have strong signals. You may want to try them. .
Are you monitoring the State Police? They also have a very strong signal throughout the state.

Are you able to receive these when you are in another location?

I was on the Coventry/W Greenwich line in December and reception was fine for most fire departments. I was using a Uniden BCD396 with stock rubber duck. No problems. I did not listen to police except for local departments, but Cranston, Warwick, and Providence came in fine. Even some across the bay too. Either scanner or settings, recheck them and see.

AL

Double check you settings, make sure no attenuation or overload. How about the weather channels, do you receive them ok?

Let me try and answer some of these questions.

I can get Pawtucket once I get closer to Prov on 95. I recieve CFPD/Fire in Warwick no prob. I get Warwick PD/FD well into the N Attleboro, they have very strong signals.

Prov PD/FD comes in very, very spotty. Once I get to 95 however, I don't have any problems.

RISP signals are for the most part failry strong and clear. Just a couple drop outs here and there.

I am fairly new to scanning so I am unsure of how to check the scanner for any potential problems or Double check you settings, make sure no attenuation or overload/

If someone could try to tell me what and how to check I would be very greatful

Thanks

Here is a clip from the manual an setting the attenuator for your scanner;

Setting the Attenuator
2:SCAN OPTION → 1:CONVENTIONAL →
Channel No. → 5:ATTENUATOR

1:ON
RF attenuation is on for the channel
2:OFF
RF attenuation is off for the channel

Check to make sure this is turned OFF on the channels you are having problems receiving.
The scanner is working as you have stated above.
You may need to install an antenna in the attic if that is posssible.

I hope this helps.

I followed the above instructions, but what I am getting is still spotty. I get CFPD very clear though. I did notice that next to the frequency are the letters NFM and when Pawtucket is transmitting or recieving it flashes between NFM and LNK and P25. Shall I assume that has to do with the APCO.

I appreciate all the help, like I said before I am very new to this and still learning my way areound my scanner. The manuel might as well be written in another lang as I don;t really understand anything it says.

Thanks Again
