• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I recently scored a real RLN4008D RIB and upon unboxing, I see it has a 15 pin D-sub connector on the PC side - I might regret asking this, but does anyone know how those pins map back to a 25-pin or 9-pin layout, or know where to find the OEM cable? eBay is striking out, all I find are cables for the Spectra 15-pin connector, and I already have one of those.

Maybe a M part number? I wasn’t able to find any pinout listings on any of the other boards or even anything here, so any advice would be helpful!

Get a DSM for the rib, It will have the P/N for the cable and evenpinouts to build yourself one.

Let me see if I can post it here.

Yes but like I posted depends on the Radios. The old Radio Shop I worked at still has a SX-386 PC running less that 20Meg CPU for older Motorolas. My boss learned the hard way Bricked a new out of the box Visar 800.

Order you a 15 pin M to 15 pin female shielded serial cable. Chop off end you do not need. Order a good DB9 female for pc end and make the connections. A good DB 9 F cost you more than the serial cable. My brother made mine using TE Connectivity 9 pin and 15 pin crimp pin connectors. He had the correct crimp tool so that was no cost.

Wow, l don’t know how I missed the info on batlabs - I have gone in search of pinouts for a few different radio RIB cables there and I guess I completely skipped over the link to the RIB to PC cable link..

I have used a Ganz-style RIB clone for about 14 years with several different 286 and 386 machines, for successful programming of many of the HT’s and mobiles I have owned and used.. Spectras, MaxTracs, my venerable workhorse Maratracs, and it worked every time, so long as the cables I made were good and the radio got power ;)

I found the RIB on ebay as a BIN for $20.00, NIB, free shipping - by chance it was posted barely an hour before I ran across it - and not much later it was sold - so I can’t wait to try it out.

Thanks,
JB
