You would program 860.3375 as the control channel frequency for cell 30, the Richland Co. simulcast. That's listed in that big list of frequencies on the Palmetto 800 database page.

But if you're not in range to receive that control channel, you're not going to hear it. Program that frequency into the scanner and listen for the idling diesel engine noise. If you don't hear it, you'll need a better antenna, or you'll need to move closer to the transmitter. Being in Lugoff you're probably close to being in range, but likely on the fringe.

Ok first off for a Pro-97 you wont be able to get the City of columbia it wont do digital. Ok, that out of the way, you will be able to get Richland SO, Richland County Fire & EMS.

All you have to do is program in these tower comtrol channels, and the following Talk Group ID's

860.48750 - HARBISON TOWER
868.03750 - RICHLAND TOWER 3
860.33750 - RICHLAND TOWER 1
868.53750 - RICHLAND TOWER 2
867.53750 - RICHLAND TOWER 4

In fact, you need only program the control channel, 860.4875. The PRO-97 ignores all channels programmed in the MOT mode that aren't control channels, and this one rarely if ever changes.

And why not also program the control channel for site 30, Richland simulcast, 860.3375, which covers a much larger portion of Richland County than site 44?

If they are digital, you will need a PRO-96 or similarly digital capable scanner. (Break out the Platinum Card) ; if they are encrypted, forget about them.

Well, in the sense that a PRO-96 can decode digital voice on talkgroups used by, for instance, Columbia PD, then yes, it's a better scanner than the PRO-97. It's also more than twice the cost ($150 on sale for the 97 vs. $399 on sale for the PRO-96).

The PRO-97 has 100 channels per bank (vs. only 50 on the PRO-96) and has 16 characters available for alpha-tags (vs. only 12 on the PRO-96). So there are some ways that the PRO-97 is better.

The GRE PSR-500 is probably the best thing going these days, though. And it's around $500 anywhere you buy it, and it's not available at RadioShack.
