I got pulled over last night for having an "In propper vehicle tag"

As you know I am a HAM, So I have the State issued Ham Tag that does not show what county I am from. And since I left the shooting range, Yes I had a weapon in the truck...So now Im cuffed!!! No big deal, I understand the reason why.Pistol and Clips seperated and secured.

Now to top it off I also have my scanner in the truck too...This isnt looking good but Im not sweating the issue. Starting to look like a scene from cops!

Too make a long story short, the only thing they are trying to get me on is the Tag and that was the only reason he pulled me over. basicly I asked the kid when will he be available for court!(No I didnt call him KID either)

Now what does the state rulling say on Amature Radio Call Sign Tags? Do they have to show a county sticker? If they do then why are all call sign tags not given one at the DMV? He made a valid point although, He asked since he was a public servent even his police car showed a county sticker, why should my tag be any different?

He didnt buy into the fact the states recognizes amature radio operators as public servents for civil defence and emergency communications. And his supervisor didnt have an answere either, so he stuck me with the improper tag citation. Man that was the longest 45 minute car stop I have ever been in.

Sorry JD, don't know anything about HAM tags. I assume they gave you a ticket and a court date. You need to get hold of who every sold you the tag and get the answer on the county tag designator. If you don't need one they should be able to furnish you the statute number or administrative rule number that you need for court. Or they can sell you a sticker!!!

You most likely also need to look at 8-143 and 8-147

Wow, I hope I don't Run into THAT cop!! I don't have a Ham tag But I have a veterans tag. And Guess what! I don't have a county sticker for that!! and I looked at that web page for the Kansas statutes :roll: I could not see anything about requiring a county sticker!
at least drudging through the legalese. :evil:

I called the the Saline County Motor Vehicle office and spoke to a clerk there who said if it a specialty plate, HAMS, VET's POW's etc, it does NOT need a a county identifier sticker. Evidently several years ago, there was confusion between the MV Office and LEO officials, where similar to Buck's situation, several people were getting citations for not having them. The brass between the KHP and KDOR hashed things out and they are no longer needed. She did say if an indivudual wanted one, they could go to the local Vehicle registration office and obtain one. She also told me she does not think it is located in a KSA, but it might be a regulation. She remembers a MEMO on the topic, but could not locate it.

Had to call as curiosity was killing me as I see all sorts of the specialty tags with no county stickers, hope it helps.

Wow... Thanks for the support guys. I to called the DMV and yes I am exempt, the same as the VETS, KNG, College Tags and Retired Armed forces tags. Rick the statute you gave me was correct, But it does not go any further to describe what is concidered to be "EXEMPT"

I took it up to municiple court to arrange a court date and the clerk got her Supervisor and they thought it was funny as well. Since the super was a KU alumni, (No sticker either) he said he would take care of it and not to worry about the court date, He was going to make a call upstairs and get it staighten out. I am to call him tomarrow and follow up.

Look, Im sure the cop was new and trying to do his job the best he could. He was polite. I tend to come off brash when I know Im right and I will argue my point. But like i said before Im not going to sweat this. Im just a little sore about going to do all of this stuff when I shouldn't have too. Trust me, in my younger days I would have been sent to jail! :roll:

Also, I am glad that your younger days are behind. Jail is such a yuckie place to spend any time. Plus has SG Co. jail got their computer fixed yet. Heard they were having problems?

No problems... He laughed at me when I asked If I had to pay court cost. He asked if I plan to come into anymore trouble.
