It sure is quiet not hearing Roanoke County Fire and Rescue anymore since they decided to encrypt all of their Fire and Rescue channels as of July 1st. A lot of the Volunteer Fire and Rescue organizations within Roanoke County would use the VHF frequency (155.0550) / 800 patch to listen to Dispatch since they also have a VHF radio frequency at their particular station to use to respond to the station and use to communicate with each other since 800 band radios are so expensive. The Volunteer staff are in an up roar about it and some have quit their organizations because of it. I would understand if it was top secret channels that didnt need picked up by a scanner but its just the Fire and Rescue Dept

I've kinda wondered what kind of an effect isolating fire dept. radio communications from the community would have on recruiting new members, since there are people who join fire departments after listening to the action on scanners.

Guess one day my scanner will just be good for listening to the weather report

I have questions as I do not live there but do visit. So Roanoke COUNTY is ALL encrypted? How about Roanoke CITY? They are in the database as unencrypted (as is Roanoke County). Thanks.

Roanoke City radio traffic comes and goes at the house. If I want to listen to Roanoke City I usually listen to it on broadcastify. I read some where that the Roanoke City Police Chief wasn't to concerned about switching the Police to encrypted channels as long as his radio still works........ We should see how that all works out in the near future.

It would be helpful to others if the database was updated to let people know what talkgroups can and cannot be heard. Anything that helps people make an informed decision before investing in a $400 or $650 scanner is good.

Questions about Roanoke county services channels.

I'm hearing communications from the Roanoke police academy on admin 1,2,3 and county police CID channel in the clear. Are these used full time by the city police academy? Also they made reference to the CID channel as ch. 2?

I also heard officers reference a channel called "trt" I am assuming that stands for tactical response team. I did not identify that talkgroup id.
