Rochester Cuts Voluntary Police Reserves Program
Nov 26, 2004 12:02 pm US/Central
Rochester, Minn. (AP) An 80-year-old volunteer program that helps local law enforcement in Rochester is being cut.
Rochester Police Chief Roger Peterson says the Police Reserves are being disbanded because of a lack of money.
Although the citizen members aren't paid, Peterson says the volunteer program is not free to the city.
The chief says the state requires that the volunteers be trained at the same level as professional police officers. In addition, there are liability issues, for incidents such as injuries that might occur during volunteer duty.
