ROCKY RIVER -- Police Chief Kelly Stillman said news this week that Cuyahoga County officials have alloted almost $40,000 in funding for new radios made it feel like Christmas in July.

County officials announced the city will receive 15 new police radios at a cost of $38,424. Stillman said the new units will be delivered today and could be up and running in the next 2-3 weeks.

The new radios will allow Rocky River officers to seamlessly connect to other agencies, cities and emergency responders throughout the region and state.

"We're extremely excited to be able to offer this to our guys and to the community," Stillman said. "It's a big relief."

According to Stillman, the department's current radio system is in poor condition and the technology it uses is terribly outdated.

Stillman said he has had numerous discussions about the state of the radio system with Mayor Pam Bobst.

"She's been extremely supportive and 100 percent committed to get us up and running on something that's safe for the guys," he said.

Starting in 2011, Cuyahoga County administrators prioritized a regional approach to communications and technology, working to create various levels of interoperability among the cities and police agencies, along with regional and state partners.

County leaders have previously supported spending general and grant funds on the establishment of the MARCS IP Project, 25 Radio System, and supported Cleveland's implementation of an 800 MHz APCO Project 25 Digital Radio.

The technology helps jurisdictions with divergent radio systems establish communications during an event or disaster.

"It's state-of-the-art," Stillman said. "Disasters, school shootings, the possibilities are endless. The system is that capable and more."
