Hi all,
I've updated the wiki page with the 2022 frequency list:
IMSA Weathertech - The RadioReference Wiki
Any updates and corrections are most welcome
Hey Racingfan360, I’m one of the SCCA Flagging & Communication workers on the track flagging the 24 Hours race. We’re all of the guys in all white flagging for the drivers at the corners
I’ll attach some information later on the DMR frequencies we use for communication with IMSA Race Control as well as our analog rebroadcasted frequencies that spectators and teams can listen to without needing a DMR radio.
As a former IMSA spectator and now as a corner worker, it was incredible all the communications fans never hear that goes on behind the scenes. “Is car 48 dropping oil…side-to-side contact between car 3 and car 24”. I would highly recommend fans listen into our analog rebroadcast with their analog scanners as you hear a tremendous amount of interesting communications that the TV broadcast or IMSA radio local FM broadcast does not provide.
Put it this way, you’ll hear us call out possible crashes or yellow flag issues long before the TV broadcasters see the yellow flags start flying. It’s truly another dimension added onto the fan experience
And on another note, you’ll have to pardon my rant but it needs to be said: I will caution those that try to think they know how to program DMR radios in RX-only mode to listen into our DMR signal rather than the rebroadcasted analog audio from our talkgroup… just don’t do it. You will screw up and transmit on our system and I will see your DMR-ID and capture that for reporting after the race. I’ve had many hams think they were slick programming their DMR radios to our DMR frequencies and absolutely clobber us by constantly keying up blocking the time slot, whether maliciously or inadvertently. Not only is this a safety issue for us to be able to talk to Race Control at all times, but if there’s a crash and a fire starts, seconds count and we can’t have spectators jeopardizing our radio system if we need to immediately get rescue crews to the driver to put out the fire. When these slick wahoos key up broadcasting their amateur DMR ID… voila, I’ve got your ID, name, and all the particulars of your Part 97 call sign. Just save yourself the headache and enjoy the race without jeopardizing your license. Don’t ruin the fun for everybody else by coming onto our system, because then we’ll have to encrypt and enable RAS and that just causes us more headaches than the ones we already have staying up 24 Hours straight, staying safe out on track.
Rant over: Enjoy the race everyone who comes out to attend! Once I know what corner I’m working, I’ll post it here. We always welcome visitors especially when we’re on a corner but not working a shift at that time. We’re always looking for new members to join SCCA and come flag! There’s also hospitality tasks you could work like shuttle transportation or food/drink transport to and from our compound! Always things you could help out with if you can’t physically work a corner with us! Come say hi if you’re trackside! We sometimes have pins and souvenirs we hand out to spectators.
