Today at about 4:00pm
I heard something strange on Roselle FD (501.1875)
They are and have been dispatched by CenCom for Fire/EMS.
But today the Union County Police (dispatch desk named 2400) was
conducting a radio test with Roselle FD (named 921).
But not just a normal radio check, they also tested the "evacuation" tones.
They x-mited one set then called CenCom to see if it was supposed to be 1 set or a set of three and asked them to x-mit it so they can hear which tone it is.
CenCom did it and like all others it is a set of 3. But thats not all, they also, a couple of times, tested paging the "off-duty and callmen" pagers.

Now that sounds to me like the County Police are getting ready to take over Roselle FD dispatching from CenCom. If the county just wanted to add them to their radio system to talk to them for some reason they wouldn't need the paging and evac tones.

I believe the County Police desk dispatches either Fanwood or Garwood FD, I think it's Fanwood.

Did anybody hear anything about this? Is it just Roselle FD or is CenCom giving up Hillside and Springfield also?

Hey thanks guys for the link, I must have missed it a couple weeks ago.
Yup that answered my question. It is what I thought. I had a feeling that something happened at CenCom because as far as I know Roselle had no problems with them and wouldn't want to deal with the county if they didn't have to.

What happened with CenCom, did they bite off more then they could chew and expensives got to be too much dispatching the medics, FDs and county ambulances for fire scenes? I wonder if the county will find the same problem, oh wait it's Union County. They will just up my taxes again.

This must have been in the works for awhile. I was wondering why when Union County started the pilot program this past year with a countywide ambulance during the daytime hours, they had UCPD 2400 dispatching them instead of CenCom.

Thanks guys,
oh and I guess by the summer I'll need to dish out $400 or $500 bucks or so for a digital scanner now. If this keeps up I'll have a pretty large scanner junk pile:D

Well it's official for Roselle Fire & Fire EMS

At like 6:00PM they were being dispatched by CenCom still.
At 11:51PM tonight I heard County-2400 dispatch Rescue-3 to a post choking victim wanting to be checked out. So CenCom is gone now for Roselle FD/EMS.

As for the radio, the Roselle side is just as usual good volume, crisp, clear.
The county side stinks. Hard to hear them. On a scale of 1-10 in volume, the Roselle side is like a 9 and the county side is very low like a 2. Some static too. Like the radio is in one room with the antenna inside the building with it and the dispatcher is talking to the mic from like 20 feet away or the next room. Hummm this could be interesting if the other towns get the same reception.
