That's great, but it doesn't change the fact that only 40% of people use it. 1024x768 is too small on a 15" CRT monitor, not to mention the fact that most monitors that small only support a 60hz refresh rate at that resolution, leading to eye strain. Lets not forget about the fact that laptops are getting smaller and smaller, and using such a large resolution is inappropriate for many on such a small screen. Also, all XGA modes have a 4:3 aspect ratio, which a lot of people don't use. I personally don't understand why Lindsay chose this, given that he has a monitor with a 16:10 aspect ratio.
My whole point is the fixed width isn't a step forward.
FWIW my new 10 inch notebook with native 1024 X 600 shows full size no problem. And I did a bit of messing around with 800 X 600 and zooming out takes care of the scroll bar.
