What are your views on the RS discone (20-043 )? Im thinkin of gettin wone but it costs some cash so i would like opinions on this matter...

Works pretty good. Only used it for receiving, not transmitting.
Just be sure to have everything snug if you are using it outdoors with extreme weather conditions you will encounter.
Other people mount them inside the attic and find they get good results
(and probably last forever too !)

I've had one up on a 30 foot mast for about a year and it has performed well, particularly if you need something with decent 800 mHz performance while still covering the other bands. It's not as badly built as some would lead you to believe. Mine has survived 50 mph winds with no damage. It is a good idea to put some Loctite on the screw ends of the radials as they do tend to loosen up over time.
If you either have strong 800 systems near you or you don't listen to 800, the RS VHF ground plane actually does a better job in the 30-50 and 150-174 mHz ranges at a lot less money.

Guess our Oklahoma winds are a bit stouter than what you guys experience. The rule of thumb around here is one RS discone per spring/summer storm season. Finally talked my friend into something a little more "durable". He's afraid of heights, so every time the d%&* things fell apart, I got to climp up on his roof and install a new one.

:lol: The RS discone is a great antenna, I have had mine about 15 years now and its still working great, and by the way I have transmitted on mine also with very good results on 2 meter, 440, and 900 mhz.

what kind of adapter would i need to connect this to a BNC scanner... and what would be the best cabel to use RG8 or RG58??

I have had a RS discone and it lasted about 6 weeks in the winds up here in SD. For $20 more you can get a real one from most suppliers of comm. antennas. Do not waste $70 on the RS model. The cone elements are hollow and crimpped (sp?) on to a weak steel screw for attachement to the antenna base. That is the weakest assembly point on the antenna. The second most weak point of the antenna is the the verticle element attachment point. My son (a RS Manager) has to explain to at least one customer a month that twisting the the element off of the mount is not considered a warrenty item...
As I said, spend the extra $20 and get a real one.

I got one new in the bag on Ebay for about $35 shipped. Hard to beat at that price.
