I am looking to buy a new hand held and found THE pro-164 at half price.

Is it a good quality scanner or should I get a uniden.

Sure it's "a good quality scanner", but will it work for YOU (what YOU want it to do, based on YOUR preferences and location)?

Well, I want to listen to local police, fire and state patrol.
I want something nice to where I can put names on the frequencies.

I would say check the database on RR and see if the Freq's or systems are digital where you live, also check in your states forum and ask if there are any plans of your area going digital, if so, the 164 may not be what you want to purchase.

I have a pro-164 and I have some trouble programming some edacs and ltr for the metro albuquerque area. I put in the frequencies listed in the database for new mexico exactly, then double checked them, but still trouble. Motorola works good though. I'm pleased that my 164 has the uhf airband. Years ago I had a 300 channel scanner with uhf airband, but it got messed up after I unknowingly recharged nonrechargable batteries in it.
