A firmware upgrade has nothing to do with front end sensitivity. The only way to make a receiver hotter is with hardware changes and that would mean sending in the scanner to Whistler and a price much higher than $60. No need to justify your spending ,$60 is very reasonable to update an otherwise outdated scanner
I plan to do the Whistler Legacy DMR Upgrade $59.99 with Whistler support moving forward. I don't see investing in a top of the line Uniden scanner ($700) that basically does simulcast better than the pro-668 but that's about it and the 668 does pretty darn good with simulcast anyway and P25 Phase 1 and 2 with DMR on the upgrade. These used Radio Shack 668s are still very capable with where the technology is today and who knows how this encryption stuff will play out.

I think it was a worthwhile investment. Considering right up the street from my location is the local Water & Sewer department headquarters and they run a DMR system.
