Given that the RS PRO-197 and the GRE 600 are essentially the same unit, but that the GRE firmware upgrades cannot be applied to the RS unit, will one be missing anything by going with the RS unit? Have previous GRE updates (for their version of the 2096) also been offered by Radio Shack? I am a little concerned, even saving $$$ utilizing the RS Friends & Family discount, that GRE may continue to offer firmware upgrades for the 600 that may not necessarily become available for the 107. Your thoughts please.

No since the 2096 and PSR-600 are two totally different scanners. The CPU of the 2096 can't be Firmware upgraded via software like the 600 can. So it's still unclear as to how quick Radio Shack will respond to Firmware updates to the 197 if one is released for the 600.

I would have to agree that with not knwing the timeframe that radio shack will get the firmware from GRE and then get it posted to their(RS) website, I would go with a GRE and not Radio Shack.
Atleast at this point untill we know how quick Radio Shack will be adding the firmwares to their website.
Unless you want your Scanner today, then of course I would go with a unit from them.

I agree, this is a big grey area until GRE releases the next updates for the PSR's... Until then it's anyone's guess as to how RS will respond. I would think that the rebranded Radio Shack updates would be available fairly quickly though. I can't see GRE dragging their feet on something like that, but who knows what will happen. If I can get a Pro-106 with the friends and family coupon for $350 though, the updates situation is a risk I'm willing to take :)

I'd buy a GRE from theradiocompany.com and get the best of both worlds......
A good radio, at a good price, with timely firmware updates !

Well I was wondering the same thing. I am really leaning towards the Pro-197 because of the discount at the moment offered by Radio Shack. The local store near me does not have any in stock and does not know will they will get any. However I can my coupon to the store and have them order it for me and get the discount. Now I am wondering like everyone one else, will the firmware be released for the Pro-197 when the it is released for PSR-600? If not I am going with the PSR-600 despite the discount. If I knew for sure I would go ahead and order the Pro-197. I would like to save some money but at the same time I would like Radio Shack to provide updates as fast as GRE does. I have a PSR-500 and I have been very happy with it as well as the support I get from GRE. Anyone know about these firmware updates?

Thanks,
Joey
