It's like which is better of Coke and Pepsi. To each their own. People will swear that the GRE radio is the best thing mankind ever made and others will say that they'll never give up their Uniden.

(Radio Shack hasn't made scanners for decades - GRE and Uniden made them to be sold under the RS banner.)

Which is the better radio scanner ??

At the risk of sounding flippant, the one that you most enjoy using and best serves your needs.

I have owned and been happy with both GRE/Radio Shack and Uniden scanners over the years. I have three GRE/Radio Shack units at the present time, two of which I bought at a huge Black Friday discount :D, but I could easily buy a Uniden the next time around.

I have both GRE (now Whistler) and Uniden. Each has strengths and weaknesses. I like the BCD396xt size, but it is more confusing with the "Quick Key" concept than the GRE/RS units and V_Scan folders to many users. Both require a learning curve.

Whistler makes several different scanners. I can never keep the RS PRO model numbers right in my head because they're all over the map compared to the original GRE model numbers. IIRC Whistler is making the GRE PSR-310, 410, 500, and 600, and soon the PSR-800 and rumored to have a working PSR-900 (mobile version of 800).

Is not the Whistler the same as pro 106 ?

GRE PSR-900 = old RS PRO-xxx = new RS PRO-??? = Whistler WS-1095
GRE PSR-800 = old RS PRO-18 = new RS PRO-??? = Whistler WS-1080
GRE PSR-600 = old RS PRO-197 = new RS PRO-652 = Whistler WS-1065
GRE PSR-500 = old RS PRO-106 = new RS PRO-651 = Whistler WS-1040
GRE PSR-200 = old RS PRO-405 = new RS PRO-650 = Whistler WS-1025
GRE PSR-100 = old RS PRO-404 = new RS PRO-649 = Whistler WS-1010

The Pro-18 is similar, but not the same as the PSR-800. The 18 has less memory, and doesn't do Phase II like the 800. I, also, believe, that the 18 doesn't have the discriminator output from the headphone as does the 800.

That's really a loaded question. To me the old RS/GRE scanners had better digital audio decoding, but the Uniden's seemed better for their displays and interfaces. I haven't worked with V folders, so I don't know how different that is to learn than the new memory architecture of the newer Unidens (of which I have a 436).

The V folder is ok, BUT it does not have every thing for all States. I used V folder when 1st got my 106
& that was a mistake, I got every thing BUT what I wanted, So I deleted all of it & manually programed
it. When I asked the question of different scanners I was not sure about them. Thanks for all the reply's
to my question. Have a good day.
