I'm looking for an airband (VHF) antenna with the highest gain possible. Has anyone found any they like?

Rubber Duck antenna don't have gain.

Good ones just have less loss.

Try one of the commercial antenna suppliers like Centurian. There is not much to thies antennas, so in general;
the longer - the better! :wink:

I haven't delt with Centurian Antennas in a while, but they will (or used to) make their rubber duck antennas custom tuned to any frequency or band that you specify. They may not sell directly to the public; you may have to go through a dealer.

Just went to their web site. They don't have all the options they used to have.

You might have to look elsewhere.

I've sold a few of the Centurion EXB-118-BNX antennas to people who looking for replacements for their aviation handhelds and to scanner users. I also use one on my Icom R10 when travelling through airports. It works pretty well; far superior to the ducky that comes with the R10. It doesn't have any gain per se, but you will notice a definite improvement over a standard scanner rubber duck antenna.

The EXB-118-BNX does 118-127MHz, and the EXB-127-BNX does 127-136MHz. I would suggest the EXB-118-BNX since most of the traffic is still in the lower half of the 118-136MHz range. It will listen just fine from 127-136MHz, too.

Yes, you do have to buy Centurion antennas through a dealer. I also happen to be a dealer for them. The price for either antenna is $17.00.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jeff

I have had one of these for year and it works great for the VHF aero band.

Probably one of the least expensive routes to take - at least to check out.

Well it certainly passes the "bigger is better" test. :)
