2 grass fires burning right now, one on or near the Siksika Nation,-Siksika and Cluny Fire are on scene- and one near Vulcan, hearing traffic on both major repeaters, sounds like Okotoks Fire also got involved with the Vulcan call as well...

Grass Fire Season Here Too

Tis the season here in our neck of the woods too. Ottawa fire dept has been going steady the last week or so. Brush fire got away on some guy today, he had to call it in himself, had to be red in the face over that one!!!

Foothills got their butts kicked somewhere near Black Diamond yesterday too. Longview (stn 1), Turner Valley (stn 2), BD (stn 3), and High River (stn 4) were on it all at some point.

We had a call today but it was someone who had jogged past a residence a while before and thought she saw smoke. Turned out to be a guy clearing land on his property.

In that last fire with Siksika, Strathmore Rural was called later to help Siksika put out flare ups, sounded like a frustrating affair as water was always running out.

In all it was Siksika, Strathmore Rural, Carseland and Cluny on scene helping each other out.

Sounds like a large grass fire just underway south of Longview right now.

Stations 1, 2, 3 and 4 all en route. (Longview, Turner Valley, Black Diamond and High River)

It also sounds like air support is on the way as well.

Big deal in East Priddis right now, near 226 Av x 112 St W.. RMES is on the way with Tender 50 and the new Rapid Response 50. Apparently lots of CFD apparatus on scene too, South District in command on C14/C3.

Smokers biggest cause

I know train brakes are often a cause of grass fires. But I wonder how many more are caused by smokers throwing their butts out the window instead of using their ash trays? When I was growing up in the prairies, it was a big "no no" to throw cigs. out the window of cars. If you started a fire, you would probably end up fighting it as well! Are we much more stupid now adays that we could care less where our butts go. Also, sounded like a little confusion of who was fighting this fire. Some departments didn't know others were fighting the same area fire. Just shows the need for rural fire departments to have same frequencies. Seemed like Strathmore and Chestermere didn't realize they had both been dispatched to the same fire [sorry, just can't remember station numbers]. Seemed like they just required more water than equipement. With a late spring, sure are having a lot of trouble with grass fires inside and outside Calgary. Probably not much can be done about fires started by trains, but people, please be careful with cig. butts.

Looked south earlier and saw smoke rising, pulled my 396 out and it sounds like Black Diamond and High River and one more department are on scene as I heard 3 were on it, sounds like it was sparked by farm equipment.

We had great relief there from this topic with the recent snowfall, but now I guess, unfortunately, that releif is drying up again as I just heard Langdon's 60 Pump responding for a grass fire...

I think CFD was dispatched first to this grass fire SE of Calgary, 2009 April 30. Unfortunately, it seemed like CFD was busy and didn't have any close equipment so called in Langdon. CFD didn't beel they would need much help, only needed a tanker but Langdon had already been dispatched.
