To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Rx only channels in a Baofeng BF-F8HP?

Has anyone had any luck with configuring Rx only channels in a Baofeng BF-F8HP (with or without CHIRP)? E.g. NOAA weather channels.
I have seen a few suggestions for other Baofeng radios (e.g. set to Duplex with offset to 0.0, set Duplex to “off”) but have not had any luck with them.
I searched and did not find an answer to this, so if it has already been asked I apologize, I would appreciate someone pointing me to the correct thread or post.

Thanks,
Dave

In CHIRP there should be a setting for each frequency to disable TX...

Thanks for the quick reply.
The Duplex setting in Chirp as a "off" setting that apparently is intended to perform this function but I have yet to get it to work.

I never used software to inhibit tx , just set the offset freq. to go beyond the range of the radio. My uv8 allows tx offset up to 599.995 Mc. So when I program ps freqs in I set the vfo this way to prevent tx . Then return it to normal after all ps freqs are in.

So what are you calling a "uv8"? The Baofeng UV-8 is a UV-82 without an LCD and minimal keypad. It must be programmed by software.

Plus the original post was about the BF-F8HP. It doesn't not use SHIFT or OFFSET for programming memory channels. You must key in both the RX and TX frequencies, for which both must be within the band limits of the radio.

I set Duplex to Off with CHIRP and it doesn't transmit on those channels. There is a "+-" on the display when tuned to that channel indicating that Duplex is set to Off.

(Edited: Sorry, amatbrewer. I misread or didn't read the model that you had. This is how it works on the UV-5R.)

It should work.

Once you select "off" in the list, you must hit enter or click onto another cell to actually make the selection permanent. If you don't, the value won't "stick" and will revert back to the original value. A quick way to see if you have properly committed your selection is to click the [Go] button. If it changes back, it wasn't set properly.

SUCCESS

Thanks for all the replies.

I tried setting it to SPLIT and the offset to a value that would put the freq outside the devices range (999.9Mhz) and that resulted in the radio indicating that it was transmitting (light and xmt icon) but my other radio received nothing. Since I don’t have access to the necessary equipment (scanner, specAnn, pwr meter, etc) I am not sure if it is transmitting something or not, so I don’t trust that.

The first few times I tried using the Duplex = OFF it did not work. After reading Jim KC9HI’s reply I decided to try again and double check that the setting “stuck”. That worked! In fact I had the same problem when I went to reverse it, forgot to get out of that cell and could not get it to xmit again. So I am 100% sure the problem was “Loose nut behind keyboard”

Thanks again for all the replies.

BTW taking the test to get my HAM license on Sat…I should not have any trouble with the Technician class test (been doing that stuff for 25+ years) but not sure I am ready for the General Class test. Next time I post I should have a call sign to include. Wish me luck.

Sometimes it's the simple stuff that trips us up. Thanks for the update and good luck on the exam(s)!

Good call, KC9HI.

Dave,

Good luck on the exam. When you pass the Tech exam, ask to take the General exam. It won't cost you anything more but your time. If you pass, you will be a General. If you don't, you've just taken another practice test.
