A San Antonio radio station began airing a political advertisement as early as 26 May presenting the local firefighters union’s endorsement of a mayoral candidate. The recorded, apparently SAFD, radio communications are used for dramatic effect.

The ad opens with tones alerting firefighters to a structure fire or other major incident followed by dispatch and fire-ground radio transmissions. The tones are the type heard since implementation of the City of San Antonio’s ProVoice radio system.

The union may have obtained the recording from a city radio or other official source, since the department’s ProVoice system may not be monitored otherwise. If true, is the union allowed such discretion when endorsing a political candidate?
