Obviously the radios are much too complicated, so we need a higher-tech device to operate them.

Meanwhile, various states are starting to outlaw operation of digital devices while mobile.

Once again - hitting the nail right on the head.
From TFA.. "The radioPad™ & radioPod™ products are offering unparalleled access to any Android application that now can be used on a digital radio system such as credit card readers, scanners, RFID devices, biometrics, authentication, alarms, ticketing, invoicing, etc. "

Unfortunately these developers see the whole world as the nail for their hammer.....

We used to think that if we could provide the mobile cop with a simple answer to "wanted/stolen/ops info/registration info/officer safety" that we'd hit the sweet spot. Every one of these extra things turns a police officer away from policing and more towards a data entry clerk....:(

IMHO - it's the "There's an app for that" syndrome. BUT - just because it exists doesn't mean it will be practical.
