Hello from Soledad CA, Well first off I love this site has alot of good info. Well I was wondering what it takes to become A safety communications systems technician? I just graduated from ITT Tech in Santa Clara with a AS in CEET and we did a little work with communications AM,FM but we didn't get heavy in it. Would like to know?

I assume you mean a Public Safety Radio Communications Tech?

Although not required, a general class or above amature license will help.

Why would they need to bend the rules? It's a continuous filing, but you can only be on the list for 1 year before you have to refile. I can tell you, though, that if you don't meet the MQs, don't bother filing the application. It'll get dropped like a bad habit by the HR people, and never even get seen by the people who work in your field. Make it a motiation to go out and get more training and experience.

This position is only for dealing with the County's telephone systems. PBXes, KTS, etc. Not radio related.

ScannerDude244, I'd recommend finding a local private commercial radio company, going to the shop in person, and asking about employment. You can also try the wireless cellular/PCS carriers for the wireless experience. Getting a position with a County or City Radio shop is difficult with just a degree. And as mentioned, many will require a FCC GROL or equivalent, though there are some who don't.

yeah thats what I want experience I have no experience in the radio field at all just wanted to know some info on how to get started. RolnCode3 btw thanks for the link

My dad works public works and he has a buddy that works for the County which does all Monterey county system most is on 90% VHF -HI. I'll see if my dad can get a hold of him see what happens. thanks for all the info guys

There is probably a PE somewhere on the board who can answer this, but I think you have to have a four year degree, and then take an exam. Similar to passing the bar, to be a professional lawyer, I believe. Good luck to you!

I just wanted being back this thread with out making a new one. Well just wanted to update I got a invite application for the county as a communications technician 1.

Significant Duties:

Initially under close supervision,installs,tests,diagnoses,troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of two-way radio equipment, mobile data, lights, sirens, video cameras, shotgun locks, automatic door openers, map lights,scanners, wig wags, WiFi, timers, and other equipment to Law Enforcement vhicles; microwave equipment, dispatch console equipment.

The thing is I never did any other that stuff. The only thing I did that came out close to any of that is install Wifi on home network and install a scanner and CB in a truck that’s the closes I did to any of that stuff. Does any have some sites or any info that can help me out? Thanks

Just another link to the basics for an entry level Communications Technician for San Luis Obispo County. If you can meet the minimums, there is essentially no experience required. Keep in mind applicants will typically exceed these but meeting the mins. will at least get your app. past personel and to a technical person for review for a possible interview.
