Excuse me if this is done incorrectly but, I'm trying to figure out how this forum works. I've been monitoring for 40 years and am working on being able to receive the new digital system. I see a lot of info available here, and if I can figure out how to communicate with this group, I should be able to provide add input to it. Please let me know if I did this right. Thanks...

Looks OK to me: Just chip in according to the subject or start new ones as appropriate.

Welcome!

1240 could very well be Saginaw City Detectives. 1109 runs DNR fish, game and ORV license checks. Thanks pjbracing for the favorable comment. I am working on ways to improve reception with different antenna placement. More when I'm sure of what I'm doing.

I heard 1668 today as "admin". Not sure if it is Saginaw City or not. Do you have 1656 as Saginaw City fire yet?

1668 is Saginaw County Sheriff's Admin
1656 is Saginaw City Fire Dispatch
1240 is some type of Surveilence Talkgroup (my thinking is a MSP or drug enforcement type group)

I bought a Wilson mag mount 301125 cell phone antenna to use as a mobile antenna for my BCD396XT. This antenna comes with a SMA connector so no adapter needed. Mobile operation with this new system is bad! If I'm near a tower (the Rose Garden parking lot) it works very well, but on River Road near Pierce or so, zero reception. The rubber ducky works better but not good at all. I have work to do on my mobile setup. Here's the good news. I found that if I mount my mag antenna horizontally instead of vertically, (I'm using a metal waste basket as a ground plane and mounting means) and point it at a tower, I can get a solid five bars.

I'm in Freeland. If I aim at the Saginaw tower, I get a strong signal but also some garble. I assume this is caused because the Saginaw and Bridgeport towers are in line with each other from my location, but the Hemlock tower provided a clear and strong signal.

I hope this info is useful to you. I would appreciate it if someone has found a mobile antenna setup that works well within the coverage area. Now that I'm satisfied that I can monitor from my home, I can buy my base radio.

A few friends of mine who are officers in Saginaw County are reporting alot of dead spots. Its to a point that they are extremely unhappy and are scared for their own safety having to call out stops on a cell phone or nextel becuase they can't get out over the air due to no signal and constant bonking out. They need to fix this quick!

This is from mobile radios I assume? Hmmmmmm so I wonder how their portable coverage is?

Very strange indeed. I can hit site 21 from M13 & I69 with a portable. Well within Shiawassee county.

Inspector44 a couple of questions: Do you use your setup in your car in different areas of the county, or just at your home? How close are you to the Saginaw tower? What model antenna are you using?

Thanks...

I have heard that only two of the four towers are simulcast and two of the towers are still analog on the old 800 system because there was a problem with them that they have to get parts from the big M.

I do travel quite a bit but I can receive anywhere in the county. I got the antenna from radio shack and it just has 800 MHz on it. I can also receive inside my house but I have to find the right spot. I live on M52 south of M46.

Based on some information that I have received. I would have to suspect the radio technicians need to do some serious fine tweaking on the antennas at the transmitter sites. I know that Central Dispatch is keeping a log of all bad reception areas. Moreover, if the techs are unable to resolve these issues, I would look for 1-3 additional tower sites to be erected in Saginaw County for additional coverage, especially in the problem areas.

Better be sooner then later or it's going to be really bad in Titabwasse Twp and Frankenmuth. Unacceptable reception problems there.

I think I have a couple of new TGIDs. 1652 Saginaw City Fireground, and 1369 Flight Care. Is anyone interested in out of area channels? Like Owosso area police (1093) and Owosso area fire (I think both 1589 and 1590)? If not, I won't post this kind of info if I come across it.

So they have their own talkgroups to use on the system? Or is that some sort of MPSCS patch as-needed?

Ditto that in Tittabawasse Township. This rainy weather really makes it impossible to listen to. Fortunately the old analog system is still carrying the main dispatch channels but it appears most of the local admin channels are gone. I'm going to try a directional antenna as soon as it arrives.
