Does Salem still have their own PD or are they now covered by Roanoke County? I'll be coming down to a Roanoke College reunion in April and would like to do a little scanning. Frequencies or IDs for Salem?

Thanks...Bob

Salem Frequencies

Salem still has it's own police and fire departments. Here are FD and PD channels.

Fire-EMS Dispatch: 453.4750
Fire-EMS Channel 3: 453.6000
Police Dispatch: 453.2250
Police Channel 2: 453.9500
Salem FD/PD: 453.3250

Hope that helps

Here's some more:

460.100 - Salem Fire/EMS Ch. 4
460.175 - Salem Fire/EMS (Ch. 5?)

All Salem public safety repeaters use 156.7 tone.

151.955/82.5 - Roanoke College Police

Yep, they still have PD, FIRE and EMS. We have their ENTIRE brand new dispatch center in our shop, getting it all ready for installation into the 911 center. Frequencies will stay the same. They will now have the ability to patch Roanoke Co. and SIRS through the consoles. For a several years now a few of the Salem Lieutenants have kept trunked MTX's in their cars to talk to the County.

While we're on the subject of Salem's radios, has anyone ever heard use of 453.325? Maybe I'm just not listening at the right time, but even during the floods, I don't recall hearing that one used.

KE4NYV,

Thanks for the info. I remember hearing a while back that Salem didn't monitor SIRS or associate too much with the County. If that's true, it sounds like things may be chaning.

Yep, I work for RCC. Pick up Bob at home every morning since he can't drive anymore. I'm a portable/site tech.

Actually, not true. We just did 5 new cars for them last Dec. They have UHF GM300's and Lowband Maxtracs in every car. They have the lowband strictly for SIRS. When they went to the new cars, including adding in a computer, they decided to keep the lowbands to keep up their accredation status. Now with the new 911 center, they have a full CEB rack setup with a central server and cetracom elite consoles that will allow the patching. The trunked MTX's are just a way to keep up with the county in the event of a situation where they are both involved.

Jason,

Thanks for the info. I'm down there a few times a year, and like to listen.

When STARS is full blown operational SIRS will go away. There will be no need for it. Nice thing is, suplus low band gear will be widely available in the state. Bad thing, most of the Moto low band gear out there is in the mid split range, so useless for 6M or 10M ham use :(

Quick question: When STARS is full blown, will each local agency have STARS in all of their law-enforcement vehicles? If not, I would think SIRS would still be needed, especially for officers traveling out of their jurisdiction.

May want to rethink the theory about SIRS' extinction. Check the VSP website and click on the STARS links and go to the FAQ. It is stated that STARS is not meant to replace SIRS, nor will the agencies subscribing to STARS get rid of their SIRS radios.
STARS will be a nice system, but it won't be the perfect replacement for SIRS.

A conversation with the lead STARS engineer verified this sentiment.

What in the world is he still going to the shop for? I saw him driving a small Wagoneer about 6 months ago, maybe longer, he used to *love* the full size ones!

How about K4SR and K4WVS? They still around? Tell them 'Andrew' said "Hey!". Im looking at getting my tech, if I study hard enough maybe. At almost age 40, I guess its not too late!

Later,
Andrew

Bob comes in to plain and simple get away from his wife for a while. Plus, he just loves it I think, you can't take that away from him and as long as his physically able, I have no problem bringing him in every morning.

Bob was driving a white Grand Cherokee for a long time. When the doctor deemed him not fit to drive, that was turned over to Tom for his on-call vehical. I know he loved those wagoneers for years. Dave Kinsey still drives a wagoneer, those damn things are tanks. I have the old cherokee for my vehical now. I drive it around quite a bit because I'm also the area's Nextel technician for RCC, so I sometimes have to make house calls to businesses.

Doug Moore, retired two christmas's ago. We see him very little. I think he was ready to part himself from the company at that point and doesn't come back much. Barb, doesn't exactly make everything that comfortable at times :(

I'h not sure about Dick, he was gone by the time I came in two years ago, but I still hear good stories about him and the arguments he would get into with Doug Moore :D
