A shooting midafternoon Wednesday in Salinas left a 24-year-old man critically wounded and two suspected gunmen under arrest following a 20-minute police pursuit, authorities said.
About 3 p.m., a blue Buick pulled into the parking lot of a Burger King at 1375 N. Main St., police said.
At that point, the 26-year-old driver of the Buick exchanged words with a pedestrian, and an argument quickly escalated, police Sgt. Dave Shaw said. The driver, a Salinas resident "well-known to police," then got out and chased the other man at gunpoint across North Main
Street to an areanear an apartment complex on Noice Drive between Navajo Drive and Chaparral Street, Shaw said.
The pursuing man fired several close-range rounds at the pedestrian, striking him twice, police said. The gunman then ran back to the Buick and drove off, Shaw said.

"This doesn't look like it was gang related," he said. "It sounds like it was an ongoing feud between the primary suspect and the victim."

About 10 minutes later, he said, officers on patrol spotted the gunman driving along North Main Street near Laurel Drive.

"A witness who saw it happen followed the vehicle and kept it in sight until officers arrived," Shaw said.

Police pursued the Buick along North Main Street and requested help from the California Highway Patrol when it drove onto southbound Highway 101, where it fled at speeds of up to 85 mph, he said.

About 3:35 p.m., the CHP said, the driver gave up the chase and pulled to the side of the freeway near Chualar.

The man, whose name hadn't been released late Wednesday, was found to have a handgun in his possession as Salinas police took him into custody, officers said.

Officers located a second, 15-year-old suspect about 5:30 p.m. on Monroe Street off Laurel Drive, Shaw said, with the help of witness reports. After the shooting, he had fled with the first suspect in the Buick and been dropped off in the Munroe Street area.

A revolver was found in the apartment, stolen out of Salinas a few months ago, Shaw said.

He said the teen has had some contact with police in the past.

The injured man, whose wounds appeared life-threatening, was shot at least once in the thigh and flown to a trauma center in the San Francisco Bay Area, said Salinas police Cmdr. Tracy Molfino.

Late into the evening, Noice Drive remained cordoned off between Navajo Drive and Chaparral Street as detectives combed the area for evidence.

Veronica Rodriguez, a 21-year-old bank teller, said her mother, Julia Rodriguez, had witnessed the shooting and held the wounded man's hand until paramedics arrived.

Veronica Rodriguez, who lives in an apartment complex near the shooting scene, said it's always scary when events like these happen.

"You never get used to it, especially when it happens right where you live," she said. "It hits home really bad."

Shaw said it's unusual for a shooting to happen in broad daylight in a well-populated retail area, but "they do occur with some regularity."
