San Antonio Traffic PD in Analog

I've noticed for the past 2 weeks or so that the SAPD Traffic Console has been in Analog mode, which allows you to hear the dispatcher side of SAPD Traffic division.

Very helpful in the car to hear just the dispatches for traffic incidents on the freeways in the area. The portables and mobiles are still digital, however I wonder if this is a step "in the right direction" by SAPD to allow more public monitoring? Or maybe just a mistake at the console.

Is the traffic channel dispatcher still analog? I talked to a SAPD dispatcher via MDC this afternoon and asked about it. He assured me that all the channels were digital and went so far as to tell me he was looking at a status screen indicating that the traffic channel was digital.

I can confirm that the Traffic Dispatcher on 2-A this morning is still in analog mode.

Hmmm..... The ProVoice system in Montgomery, Alabama will suddenly "go analog" on some of the talkgroups for no reason. Sometimes it lasts for just a few transmissions, other times its all day. No one seems to know why.

a few months ago sapd west dispatcher was analog for about two weeks then went back to digital, i think it might be a system glitch or something. I hope it is a way for us to monitor at least the calls.

The Dispatchers can toggle the console between analog and digital mode. The portables and mobile radios cannot - they are fixed to transmit in digital mode. There is one SA Fire Dispatcher that seems to always put his console in analog mode when he is one shift.

This week, SAPD East Patrol Console has been in analog mode, along with the Traffic Console.

My advice is for San Antonio scanner listeners to keep an eye on LE and Fire talkgroups. we might see more analog operations as we proceed...

Have you heard why they do this? In Montgomery, Alabama, the dispatchers seem to do the same thing with the ProVoice fire and (occasionally) police dispatch talkgroups.

I'm just curious as to why they would do this?

Warren, could be personal preference? I dunno.

Some dispatcher may think they are heard better in analog mode rather than digital - due to digital artifacts etc.

Maybe he is a scanner nut too and is giving you guys a break :wink:
