A very reliable source at the big "M," has informed me that San Bernadino County is planning to overhaul their aged Motorola Type-II trunking systems, and implement a Project 25 TRS. This new system will be mostly an Omni-Link system, but will allow for a few simulcast cells, and repeaters for coverage. The new countywide system will be online sometime in 2011-2012, or sooner if federal funding can be secured. Does anyone know how many radios will be needed to replace the older Type-II analog units?

a lot!

Hi,

Just a guess but system 6/7 alone is licensed for 11,000 units. Assuming all were used, alot!

The number 18,000 sticks in my mind for some reason.

This is from the 2008-2009 county business plan:
1C. The Network Services division has replaced 25% of the 800 MHz site controllers with digital capable and vendor supported controllers. This project is currently under review pending a consultant study of the entire radio system replacement/upgrade. ISD will submit revised performance measures regarding the 800 MHz radio system in subsequent business plans based on recommendations resulting from the consultant study. In 2006-07, all 1,200 red channel radios were deployed.

When you think about it, 18,000 radios is a lot of units to replace, but San Bernadino is the nation's largest county, and would need an extensive radio system to provide adequate coverage. I am glad to see that they are leaning towards Project 25, rather than OpenSky. Hopefully, the new County TRS will be able to integrate with the proposed statewide system, whenever it gets off the ground.

You mean the pipe dream? That system is still a "glint in the eye".

I think Berdoo would actually have a decent amount of radios to replace since they're still using STXs; versus flash upgrading equipment.
