A Ham Radio Operator With too much frequency.
Recently the SLO county supervisors approved $6.1 million budget for a digital radio system. Does anyone know what kind of digital system they will be installing?

Here is what I found,
REDWOOD SHORES, California - The San Luis Obispo County Communications Division, responsible for setting up public safety wireless systems across 3,300 square miles of rugged California terrain, has updated its microwave radio network with the Constellation™, the latest medium-capacity, point-to-point digital microwave radio from Harris Corporation. The solution deployed by San Luis Obispo provides wireless communications for the county sheriff patrol, fire department, and emergency response teams, as well as two "hot pursuit" units. Harris Corporation is a global leader in microwave equipment and services.
For the past 28 years, the county has used Harris analog radios in a loop system. As a result of its positive experience with Harris' product quality and turnkey customer service, the San Luis Obispo County Communications Division selected the Constellation when it was time to switch to digital equipment, installing 6 GHz 16 T1 and 28 T1 radios in 1999 and cutting over user traffic to the public safety system in January 2000.

That is the backbone system for the current analog system. The new system will be digital voice radios for dispatching the county police.
"Radio" can mean so much more than VHF/UHF. Microwave "radios" also fit in.
The "digital" is just the microwave backbone. There's no plans for digital voice in the near future. And what is county police? The link Rick linked to is 20 years old so it's a bit out of date as well.

If you notice in the link, they mention the system is 20 years old, which meets up with the timeline for the Harris Constellation system. The Tait repeater hardware certainly is not 20 years old, which points to this upgrade being the microwave radios.

That's what sounds like. CALfire wont go digital on the county channel and 6million isn't much for full system upgrade radios/Microwave/towers. It cost Monterey County 30mill+ for the new system
That's not a lot of money for a radio system.
