Sangean 803-A full coverage? I can't get it to

I have an "Ambassador 2020" aka Sangean 803-A, and supposedly it's continuous coverage on shortwave but I can only get it to listen in the bands assigned to the buttons on it. Anyone have any hints?

For the $40 I spent for it, I'm already happy, i just want to be able to listen to code on 7040 and on 30m. Then the radio would be perfect!

Yes, it is full coverage. I have one. How are you not able to get that frequency? You should be able to tune it in. It's not that difficult.

Also, just enter the frequency on the keypad. It has direct entry.

It's impossible for me, I try tuning and once it reaches the edge of that band, it won't tune further. How do I get around this, or am I asking the impossible?

OK it's looking like I should swap out the AA batteries, and probably clean and lubricate the contacts first .... the CPUs on these apparently get confused. If it's not that then I dunno what it could be, from the stuff I"ve been reading that will likely fix it.
