Since moving to Florida from Illinois I can't pick up the police in Sarasota Country. I would like to listen again but not sure what scanner I should get that will pick them up. Prefer a handheld and do I need a digital scanner? Was told by one company the 296d would do the job, but before I go dish out that kind of dough what some opinions from those at least in the state or sarasota country that might be using this scanner. All help appreciated.

According to the database elsewhere on this web site, Sarasota County uses a Motorola ASTRO digital trunked system. So yes, you will need a digital scanner to hear them. Any of the digital models available should work, including the BC796D.
Sarasota County is digital for police and fire both the county and city.
Englewood fire district uses a uhf freq. See the list as I posted it there.
School buses on the county system are analog. Time to pony up the bucks or put it on the holiday wish list.
