SARS (or STARS??) Rescue Sevice

Have heard a few references to either SARS, or STARS search and -rescue. Don't know if this is a company, or a State orginization.
Anyone have their freq's for Madera, Mariposa, Fresno, Kings, Tulare Counties?

Are you sure you're not just hearing the common acronym for Search And Rescue (SAR)?

STARS in most CA counties are old people, err I mean retirees, that volunteer with the Sheriff's Dept. to help out with high level patrols, Search and REscue, traffic control and paperwork.

SAR is SEARCH AND RESUCE.


Both are typically connected with the Sheriff's Office and may use an auxillary Sheriff channel and sometimes as in my county, most of the SAR folks are hams, and they will use a ham repeater because it has better coverage up in the high mountains than the Sheriff's repeater. I think for close in stuff, you may find SAR using FRS radios as well.

Could be referring to Hams, but references I've heard have been either on Mid-Valley Fire or CDF (California Division Of Forestry) -- haven't been quick enough to stop the scanner on channel where I heard references
