Just wondering if anyone knows what radio system Sask. highways has switched to now that Fleetnet is gone? It would be nice to listen to the snowplows when it snows for highway updates.

Highway Transport Patrol is using the PPSTN, however they are encrypted. As for the plows, they transitioned off FleetNet quite some time ago, at least in my area. They do operate on a VHF simplex frequency, which I don't happen to have handy. Maybe mobile1 can chip in and refresh me.

I'm unable to confirm if Snow Plows are encrypted, however Highway Transport Patrol, or Commercial Vehicle Enforcement everywhere else, is encrypted. There are still numerous Government of SK talkgroups that are encrypted and unidentified.

Highways has moved to mostly cell phones and its saved them huge dollars compared to Fleetnet which was 145.00 a month each plus airtime.
They do have VHF radios but there Kenwood digital and unable to be decoded.

The Kenwoods they are using have a switch to choose digital or analog so im not sure if you can scan Kenwood in analog, also the Highway Painting section uses Motorola analog , you may have heard them as they have a few winter workers doing signs and other duties ...

Mike phones and cell phones will never replace a properly working two way radio in a pinch. It would be interesting to monitor their simplex channel in a major storm and then judge how well they communicate. The Kenwoods are probably the old RCMP radios of which some could be digital capable.

I can see it now RCMP waiting for a highways vehicle to arrive so they can use the radio in private:)

Does anyone have any actual frequencies? If they are using simplex VHF I'm sure the frequencies would be the same across the province. This would also probably give a guy a good starting point instead of scanning the entire VHF spectrum. If they have gone onto the new system and ENC that would suck.

They're using Kenwood's "NEXEDGE".
Also they rarely use them because of the 15 mile range or so. You well hear a diesel engine sound when you do monitor them.

Not to hijack this thread but a check of the TAFL for Saskatchewan and Alberta is interesting on 166.620. Some interesting Search and Rescue stuff that may have been used in the avalanche in southern Alberta Saturday. Also some interesting stuff for Saskatchewan.

Thanx for the info. I'll monitor that frequency and see what I get. If I do hear anything I'll make sure to post it. More snow in the forcast so I should hear something in the next few days hopefully.

I finally picked them up. 168.06 (simplex) in my area. This was definitely snow plows. Now the question is, is this a snow plow frequency for accross the province, or just the frequency in my area? According to TAFL this is a province wide frequency. Any theories???

Had to blow the dust off of this post as its been a year. With the snow fall we had I decided to listen to the snowplows. Last year they were analog but this year all I'm hearing is a digital burst. CT is open (search) on my GRE 500 so it should be searching for a CT right? They must be using kenwood digital as previously suggested. Is anyone else listening to highways in Sask?

Got these from the TAFL data a while back.
167.7150
167.7450
168.0300
166.6200
170.9250
170.9550

I loaded them in and heard nothing from my Uniden. Why?
There has been little or no snow for them to push around here so they are not
out on the highways?
I have not heard anything because the new Unidens MUTE encryption !

Turn off ignore

Thank goodness it doesn't stop on encrypted frequencies. But can't one turn that function off, or Data Skip off?
