Satellite dish in the attic for L band

Ever thought about will a satellite dish work in the attic, I can tell you, if you have a stick built home with asphalt shingles, you stand a very good chance. I made up a dish today, tested it outside and then moved it to the attic, it lost 2 db, but still left me with a signal of about 12 db. YMMV. big thanks to scudGB, for the encouragement, to give it a shot.

I use a 1 meter dish in my bedroom looking through drywall and some shingles with no problem looking at two INMARSATS.

i have a 1M dish in shed with no line of site to any thing from garden to big for loft hatch (thinking of cutting and rebuild in loft)
missus would KILL ME if brought it indoors + house 100 yr old 18 inch stone walls !! so no point

The worst problem with mine on the tripod in the bedroom is heading my head on it in the middle of the night.

Just an old tv dish, that's made from either fiber glass or composite, I used a lazer pointer on the old LMB to find the focal point of the dish, then looked through the hole in the center of the helical to see if I was in the correct area. I'm happy with it. Typically getting 12 db at around 1539 MHz and 17 MHz at 1545 MHz, that's lots for both jaero and techmanoid

What dish are you using?

It is a government surplus dish bought over 20 years ago. No name on it. Came in segments in American Tourister luggage with 92 screws which is why once up, I never took it down.
