SBS-1 Real-time Virtual Radar
Combining state-of-the-art electronics and new technological advances has enabled Kinetic Avionic Products Limited to produce the revolutionary SBS-1. For the first time aircraft enthusiasts worldwide are able to directly monitor the skies in an unprecedented fashion. Additionally, the SBS-1 provides small and medium sized airfields with many of the safety and operational benefits previously only available to large international airports - at a fraction of current radar costs. Coupled with a Mode-S/ADS-B transponder the SBS-1 becomes an invaluable tool in flight training operations. (For a full description of Mode-S/ADS-B click here: http://www.kinetic-avionics.co.uk/ )

Hva someone of you tested the SBS-1??

No, but wouldn't mind testing it. Looks very cool, and would be really neat to visually track what I'm listening to on my scanner.

Does their ad copy mention anywhere that an FCC license is needed to operate a radar transmitter?

Or is this a device that intercepts radar reflections only? If so, how can it be useful when the operator doesn't know the precise location(s) of the originating radar station(s)?

Unlike Secondary Surveillance Radar, Mode-S sends out a specific identification signal. ADS-B then, using GPS position data, transmits an aircraft’s positional fix information. Using those two techniques aviation enthusiasts can then put to good use a device like the SBS-1. Since ADS-B was just recently implemented in the U.S. its usefulness for tracking aircraft isn’t promising enough to purchase this receiver. But the system is growing. This year, for example, the FAA plans to complete the installation of 23 ADS-B ground stations along the east coast. I might look into something like this a few years down the road though. It looks cool.

Most intercontinental aircrafts is allready equiped with combined Enhanced Mode S transmitter and ADS-B Mode S squitter transmitters, so if you live close to an International Airport a lot of aircraft should show up on the screen.
