Depending on where you live in Va., the SC230 isn't a real good choice. It doesn't trunktrack - something that more and more areas are migrating toward. However if your area is still conventional, there's a couple of things I would suggest doing, even if you do manage to get someone to program it for you...
a. We have a FAQ now for the DMA scanners (of which the SC230 is one) - it includes a link to an article by UPMan that has a good intro of the terminology (for example, there are no banks anymore...)

It also mentions about becoming a premium subscriber. If you purchase ARC Sport from BuTel (available thru Scanner Master) you will be able to directly connect with the database on this site and download conventional frequencies into the software. There's also a link to the 'Easier to Read' manuals website which has an entry for the SC230
